Dance with Kids 與兒女共舞

二十多年前正當我青春洋溢的年代，朋友從美國帶來

一本"The Prophet"『先知』的精裝書送我，書中經

典的哲理好似一盞明燈，指引正在尋找人生生存意義

且在現實生活中載浮載沉的我。然而年輕叛逆的我對

於『孩子』篇章裡的道理，似懂非懂，只覺得對照下

自己活像個被傳統過度壓抑的可憐孩子。

為人母後，我經常翻閱『先知』，期待自己能實踐書

中哲理，當個理性的成功媽媽。美麗的原文精裝書隨

著歲月流逝，逐漸泛黃老舊。我漸體會書中對待孩子

的哲理，只是懂得和做到的距離有多遠，要走多久才

走得到？

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

他們經由你而生，但不是你創造的。

雖然他們跟你同住，卻不屬於你。

你可以給他們愛，而不是思想。

因為他們有自己的思想。

You may house their bodies but not thier souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

   which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,

你可以提供他們的身體安居之處，卻不可以禁錮他們的靈魂，

因為他們的靈魂居住的希望之屋，是在夢中你也無法觸及的。

你可以勉強自己與他們相像，但不要設法讓他們像你。

因為生命不能回頭，也不能停滯在昨日。

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,

   and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as he loves the arrow that flies,

   so He loves also the bow that is stable.

你是一具弓，你的子女好比有生命的箭經由你射向

前方。

射手看見沿途的標記，他奮力地彎曲你，以使箭能

射得快又遠。

愉悅的屈服在他的手中吧！因為正如祂喜愛那飛馳

的健，祂也同樣珍愛那強固的弓。

十一年前一位澳洲藉同事離開台灣前送我這本中英

雙語的『先知』做為感謝的禮物，再次收到『先知』

心中還是充滿喜悅。封面的紀伯倫英文名字卻拼錯了。

紀伯倫 Kahlil Gibran: 1883-1931,出生於知名哲

學家眾多的黎巴嫩，是位知名詩人、哲學家、藝術

家。他的言論和思想影響力不僅深植中東地區的人

們，詩篇甚至被翻譯超過20種的各國文字，遍及全

世界。
